Blue Jay

(Cyanocitta cristata)

Geographic Location- resident from Gulf of St. Lawrence and north Manitoba to south Florida and Gulf of Mexico

Habitat- deciduous and coniferous forests as well as in residential areas

Song- a harsh slurring jeeah; they also often like to imitate red-tailed hawks

Location Observed- in my backyard at the birdfeeder

Date Observed- 4/2/01

Personal Notes- The blue jay has bright blue and white feathers. This is an excellent camouflage scheme because a predator from above would have a harder time seeing it from above due to the blue feathers. A predator looking up at the blue jay would just see the white of its belly that would blend in with the clouds.
