Common Grackle

(Quiscalus quiscula)

 

 

Geographic Location- Gulf of St. Lawrence and Manitoba south to the coast of Florida and Louisiana

 

Habitat- Residential areas, open cropland, and wooded swamps

 

Song- a split rasping note that is both husky and squeaky, chuck

 

Location Observed- my front yard

 

Date Observed- 4/11/01

 

Personal Notes- Although the picture might not show the grackle very clearly, I know for sure that it is one. Grackles are very common where I live. I see them taking over the bird feeder every once in awhile. The cool thing about grackles is that they look black but they are really a blend of purple and blue. When they sit in the sun just right, their true color can be seen.
