Downy Woodpecker
(Picoides
pubescens)
Geographic Location- Gulf of Mexico to Newfoundland, Quebec and Manitoba
Habitat- All forests and residential areas
Song- a rapid whining of notes, descending in pitch at the end
Location Observed- my backyard
Date Observed- 4/13/01
Personal Notes- This Downy woodpecker really likes the bird food we set out in the feeder. Every morning I can either hear him or see him. He has a red spot on the back of his head as observed in the photo above. His wings are black with stripes of white. While on a walk through the woods, I noticed many dead trees had holes pecked into them; most likely they were made by this species of woodpecker.
