Herring Gull

(Larus argentatus)

Geographic Location- Gulf of St. Lawrence and Great Lakes to Gulf of Mexico

Habitat- Great Lakes and Inland Lakes

Song- a loud kee-oww, kee-oww; a dry gah, gah when with a colony

Location Observed- this picture was taken off the coast of Savannah, Georgia (Although I have seen the Herring gull in the fields near my house)

Date Observed- 8/11/99

Personal Notes- These birds have white bodies with light gray wings. The tips of the wings look like they were dipped in black ink. I see these gulls in the fields all the time feeding on what’s left over from the hay crop. I also noticed that they don’t really like to fly alone because whenever I see only one there is usually one or two more close by.
