Northern Cardinal
(Richmondena
cardinalis)
Geographic Location- United States east of the Plains and north to New York
Habitat- Residential areas, farmsteads, and deciduous forests
Song- a series of clear, slurred whistles diminishing
in pitch, what-cheer cheer cheer
Location Observed- my Grandma’s backyard
Date Observed- 4/2/01
Personal Notes- It took me a long time to get a decent picture of a cardinal. They are always so elusive. But after sitting behind my grandparents’ house for about and hour, I finally got a decent shot. The bright red of the male makes it very easy to see but the female cardinal (pictured below) on
the other hand has a light brown color that makes it hard to pick out in the grass.
