Northern Cardinal

(Richmondena cardinalis)

 

 

 

 

Geographic Location- United States east of the Plains and north to New York

 

Habitat- Residential areas, farmsteads, and deciduous forests

 

Song- a series of clear, slurred whistles diminishing in pitch, what-cheer cheer cheer

 

Location Observed- my Grandma’s backyard

 

Date Observed- 4/2/01

 

Personal Notes- It took me a long time to get a decent picture of a cardinal. They are always so elusive. But after sitting behind my grandparents’ house for about and hour, I finally got a decent shot. The bright red of the male makes it very easy to see but the female cardinal (pictured below) on                

the other hand has a light brown color that makes it hard to pick out in the grass.
