Red-bellied Woodpecker
(Melanerpes
carolinus)
Geographic Location- resident from Florida and Gulf of Mexico north to Delaware, Lake Erie, Minnesota, and South Dakota
Habitat- deciduous forests and farmsteads
Song-
churr or chaw
Location Observed- my grandma’s backyard
Date Observed- 12/11/00
Personal Notes- At first I thought that this was a red-headed woodpecker until I looked it up in a bird book and found that it is nothing of the sort. The red-headed woodpeckers have solid red heads not just the top like the picture above. Then I saw the picture of the red-bellied woodpecker, it was a perfect match. I see these woodpeckers all the time on trees in the backyard or sitting in the birdfeeder.
