Wood Duck
(Aix sponsa)
Geographic Location- Gulf of Mexico to south Ontario and south Manitoba
Habitat- streams, wooded swamps, and shallow marshes
Song- a distressed whoo-eek, shrill (female) and a finch-like jeee (male)
Location Observed- Animal reserve facility in Madison
Date Observed- 6/23/99
Personal Notes- The male wood duck (pictured above) has an unusual arrangement of color and its head and body. The head has two white stripes going down each side. The torso of the wood duck has different shades of brown for easy camouflage in the woods.
